Winter Iceboating Update

On January 27th the boat is assembled on the north shore of Winnebago, there is approximately 12 square miles of 16 inches of solid ice, without major cracks. This area was also selected by the stern-steerer association to hold their regatta that same weekend. This block of ice has been sailed on by the Neenah Ice Yacht Club from Neenah to the north shore. On the 28th with the winds averaging 16 and gusting to 22 the boat is rigged by Geoff Catlin, Daniel Kampo Sr., Daniel Kampo Jr. and Frederick Kampo. The boat accelerates beautifully with all the modifications from the year before. At approximately a mile and a half out, just beginning our fist tact, at approximately 76 mph the boat falls into a spring and stops in 10 feet. Both of Daniel’s wrists have sustained compression fractures and severe whiplash. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who helped us get our boat out, also Jim Stolla, Geoff Catlin and other members of the Nennah Ice Yacht Club for helping us with repairs and getting back in sailing form.
We took the boat down on February 15th, we will be ready for spring sailing. Hoping for good ice conditions.
